CIHR Reviewer in Training (RiT) program

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is pleased to announce the launch and expansion of the Reviewer in Training (RiT) program for the Spring 2023 Project Grant competition.

The RiT program offers Early Career Researchers (ECRs) a learning opportunity to gain a better understanding of the elements of high-quality review and the peer review process through direct participation in the Project Grant competition.

Participants in the RiT program can now take part in one of two roles: Mentee and ECR reviewer. Like previous competitions, Mentees will participate in the Project Grant competition with the support of a Mentor. They will conduct practice reviews on up to three applications, attend the peer review meeting, present one review, and participate in the committee discussion. New to this competition, applicants who hold CIHR or equivalent funding may choose to apply as an ECR reviewer. ECR reviewers participate in the same capacity as all reviewers, without the support of a Mentor, and with a reduced number of applications to review (up to five).

Following completion of the RiT program, participants will be promoted within CIHR’s Reviewer Pathway and are expected to participate in peer review when requested and available to do so.

The application period for the RiT program opens January 9, 2023 and closes February 3, 2023.
