Applications Open for EduCanada Scholarships for 2024-2025

The Government of Canada, through EduCanada and the Canadian Bureau for International Education, has recently opened applications for three short-term scholarships.

Go Global is currently accepting from prospective Visiting International Research Students (VIRS) applications for the following programs:

  1. Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) (UBC deadline Tuesday, March 5, 2024)

For students who are citizens of, and studying in one of the following ASEAN countries/territories: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR)), Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

  1. Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program  (UBC deadline Thursday, March 7, 2024)

For students who are citizens of, and studying in one of the following eligible countries/territories:

  • Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos
  • Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama
  • North America: Mexico
  • South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
  1. Study in Canada Scholarships (UBC deadline Thursday, March 7, 2024)

For students who are citizens of, and studying in one of the following eligible countries/territories:

  • Asia: Bangladesh, Nepal, Taiwan
  • Europe: Türkiye, Ukraine
  • Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia
  • Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda


General Eligibility Criteria:

  • These awards are available to Visiting International Research Students (VIRS) to undertake research or study at UBC for a period of 4 to 6 months
  • Students currently enrolled in a UBC degree are ineligible to apply
  • The candidate’s research may commence as early as August 1, 2024 and no later than February 1, 2025
  • All awards are available to graduate and undergraduate students for study or research activity
  • For undergraduate exchange students, a signed agreement or understanding between UBC and the student’s home institution must be in place at the time of application and must be from a current UBC student mobility partner institution.   • Preference is given to students coming to undertake research from institutions with which UBC has established research activity

Due to the large number of applications, an internal ranking of applications will be undertaken by a cross-UBC committee that will consider the strength of research, the applicant’s letter of intent, and alignment with UBC’s strategic initiatives.

Scholarship Value:

The scholarship value varies depending on the scholarship, duration and level of study:

  • Canada-ASEAN SEED and Study in Canada: CAD $10,200 for college, undergraduate or graduate students (Master’s and PhD) for four months or one academic term of study or research
  • Canada-ASEAN SEED and Study in Canada: CAD $12,700 for graduate students (Master’s and PhD) for a period of five to six months of study or research
  • ELAP: CAD $8,200 for college, undergraduate, or graduate students (Master’s and PhD) for a minimum of four months or one academic term of study or research
  • ELAP: CAD $11,100 for graduate students (Master’s and PhD) for a period of five to six months of study or research


Application Process:

EduCanada requires all applications to be submitted by a single representative at UBC on behalf of the student. As such, the Go Global office at the Vancouver campus plays a coordinating role in this process, and submits all applications on behalf of the University of British Columbia.

The deadline to nominate and submit all application documentation for the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) is Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

The deadline for the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program and Study in Canada program is Thursday, March 7, 2024.
