Pre-Announcement: Canadian Microbiome Initiative 2 (CMI2): A Focus on Function and Translation Research Teams

The CIHR Institutes of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes; Genetics; Infection and Immunity; and Gender and Health, in collaboration with the Institutes of Aging; Cancer Research; Human Development, Child and Youth Health; and Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction, are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of the Research Teams as part of the Canadian Microbiome Initiative 2 (CMI2): A Focus on Function and Translation. The overall goal of the CMI2 is to enable the development of effective preventative and therapeutic interventions through a deeper understanding of the role of microbiome in human health. The upcoming competition will support Research Teams to develop new knowledge on the causational roles of microbiome in human health and disease which will lead to the development of new preventative and therapeutic interventions.

Objectives

The objectives of the Canadian Microbiome Initiative 2 Research Teams funding opportunity are to:

  • Create knowledge through translational research on the causational links between microbiome and human health and disease with consideration of sex as a biological variable and gender as a social determinant of health.
  • Encourage interdisciplinary collaborations and foster Canadian expertise in microbiome and human health and disease to build synergies, and facilitate the sharing of data and resources.
  • Build upon and further the platforms and services provided by the CMI2 Research Core to build synergies, facilitate the sharing of data and resources and facilitate knowledge translation.

Of this $14,000,000:

    • Up to $2,000,000 is available to fund 1 application focusing on causational roles of microbiome in human health and disease in the Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health’s (IHDCYH) mandate area.
    • Up to $12,000,000 is available to fund 6 applications focusing on causational roles of microbiome and human health and disease in the general pool.
    • Included in this $14,000,000, Institute of Aging will contribute up to $450,000 to applications relevant to the Institute of Aging mandate.
  • Additional funding is available through Mitacs to fund internships for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in CMI2 funded projects.
