Hampton Fund program relaunch

Following up from the discussion we had of the Hampton Fund grant program earlier this year, we have now finalized and launched the revised criteria for the Hampton New Faculty grant. The main change to eligibility for the funding, in accordance with what we heard from many of you about funding needs, is that “new to UBC” Associate and Full professors can now apply within 24 months of their appointment at UBC. There is a section of the application form in which faculty at these ranks must explain their need for the funds, to allow for evaluation of relative need of applicants if application requests exceed available funding. The application instructions specify that “Funding will not normally be granted to researchers arriving at UBC with Chair positions, or holding large research grants.”

In addition, Educational Leadership tenure-stream faculty are not excluded from the program. In fact, the previous wording of the program criteria did not technically exclude them (it did not specify research-stream faculty). Of course, if EL faculty are applying, they will need to demonstrate their plans and likelihood to successfully leverage the Hampton funds into later external funding applications.

Finally, based on lack of demand, we are phasing out the Established Scholar grant stream of the Hampton Fund. Established scholars in most cases can obtain internal funding from other sources, such as the Explore and Exchange grants.

You may find the new application form and instructions at https://sparc.ubc.ca/sshrc-programs/ssh-internal-funding-opportunities#Hampton, and applications for this year will be due by Sept. 1, 2022.
