On July 3, 2024, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, signed an agreement allowing Canada’s enhanced participation in Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe. The Government of Canada will allocate €99.3 million (about $147 million CAD) over four years to fund Canada’s association to Horizon Europe.
In recognition of its scientific rigour and capacity, the European Commission approached Canada to participate in Horizon Europe as an associate member. Canada is also the first country in the Americas to join the programme. The signature of the agreement enables Canada to participate in Horizon Europe as an associate country under Pillar 2. This agreement creates new opportunities through competitive calls for Canadian scientists, researchers and innovators to collaborate with international partners, providing them the ability to lead projects, receive direct funding, and help shape future work programs and funding calls. It will also allow Canadians to showcase their expertise and know-how on the international stage.
