The goal of the Exploration stream is to inspire high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research.
A quick reminder that New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) awards a proportion of Exploration grants to Early Career Researcher (ECR) led projects, so they are especially encouraged to apply.
Notice of Intent:
- Due date: August 19 (ORS deadline August 18)
- SPARC resources to be updated by July 18th (ex. NOI checklist document detailing what is required and what can’t be changed at the full stage)
- NFRF’s May NOI webinar slides are uploaded and will be a useful reference
- See our Sample Grant Library for examples of funded UBC-led projects
- As the NOI is not adjudicated, we do not offer formal reviews of this content but can answer questions about eligibility, fit to program, and the application process itself. Our supports are designed to ramp up for the full stage application.

Full Stage:
- Due date: October 21 (ORS deadlines, Oct 14 for paperwork and Oct 20 for submission)
- SPARC resources to be updated following NFRF’s September 9th webinar
- EDI-Research Practice workshop (September date TBD)
- Strategic and editorial review of the 7-page application: September 29-October 17
- More details forth coming after the NOI stage – these will be sent to all UBC NPIs
- Reviews are conducted on a first come, first served basis with a limit of one review per applicant. In order to equitably support applicants across all faculties, we ask that applicants do not seek out a SPARC review if a faculty-level review is available to them.
