SPARC Support

SPARC offers a proven competitive advantage for applicants who participate in SPARC’s support programs. For the upcoming 2018 Fall competition, SPARC is offering the following support services:

  • NEW: CIHR Information Session: CIHR will present an overview of the Fall 2018 Project Grant program on Tuesday, July 31 from 1pm-2pm. The session will be recorded and have a videoconference link to the affiliated-hospital sites (CWH, SPH, VGH). Note that the session will be followed by a Tri-Agency consultation session on the ‘Changes in the Use and Management of Tri-Council Grant Funds’ from 2pm-3pm. The sessions will also take place at the Okanagan campus on Wednesday, August 1.
  • NEW: Workshop – Sex and Gender Considerations: The next interactive workshops detailing CIHR’s sex and gender directives to peer reviewers will occur on Wednesday, July 25 (8am-9am) at the Diamond Health Care Centre (VGH). Participants have the opportunity to also schedule a follow-up consultation with Dr. Tamara Bodnar to further discuss their study design and/or peer reviewer feedback.
  • Internal Review:These small discussion groups are designed for faculty to discuss, reflect and share input with peers on the concept and study design elements of their proposed study. New Format: In partnership with UBC’s Postdoctoral Fellows Office (PDFO), SPARC is introducing a pilot training program (see link) to integrate emerging scholars into its Internal Review process: Register online for one of two sessions on Thursday, August 9 (2pm-4pm) or Friday, August 10 (10am-12pm).
  • NEW: SPARC Review – Registration Summary:Given the importance of the Research Summary at the Registration stage, SPARC will provide targeted feedback on the 1-page document with the aim to increase clarity and avoid possible committee/reviewer mismatches. SPARC will provide reviews two weeks prior to the CIHR Registration deadline, from Monday, July 23 to Monday, August 13.
  • Response to Reviews:This individualized support for applicants seeking to resubmit a revised proposal will be available until Friday, September 7. Please contact Elizabeth Cheu to register your intent to participate.
  • SPARC Review – Research Proposal:Editorial review of draft research proposals will be offered to applicants three weeks prior to the CIHR Application deadline, from Monday, August 20 to Friday, September 7.
  • NEW:Workshop – Grant at a Glance: Take part in a 1-hour workshop led by medical and scientific illustrator, Vicky Earle, to help you design and draft a graphical abstract summarizing your research proposal at a glance of an eye. Register for the August 17 (9am-10am) workshop to be held at UBC-V. Participants will also have the opportunity to schedule a follow-up consultation with Vicky Earle to further refine their illustrations.
  • NEW: Online Resources: SPARC has updated and expanded its online resources and samples grants to include newtemplate and guideline documents such as Sex and Gender-Based Analysis considerations and Knowledge Translation planning essentials.

UBC Internal Deadlines

  • ORS-Point Grey(see 5th dropdown item) internal RPIF deadline is, Sep. 6 at 8:30am (PST) and the applicant e-submission deadline is Tue., Sep. 11 at 8:30am (PST).
  • ORS-Okanaganinternal deadline is 48 hours prior to the external deadline (i.e. Mon., Sep. 10 by 4:30pm (PST)).
